Welcome aboard Fred.
I was a spark in 11 mess on the Vic and mainly worked with the fan party in and around the boiler /engine rooms. With all  those stokers around it was a case of keeping one eye on the job and the other on my tools as for some strange reason they used to disappear rather quickly. (only joking Stan).
Have you any pics of the tour if so why not upload them to the gallery. I might be able to put a name to a few faces
Regards
Gary

;)Good to have you onboard Fredtubb, I liked your photos !! I must say the PX club in Olongapo must have done well out of the Vic we were all in there on the previous commission, though the town did draw us out a bit, wild west !! Trust you didn't lose your tools on the Vic ? if you did it wasn't me, I flew home in 64, had a brilliant tool kit, didn't know what to do with it, I only ever used a wheel spanner !! Ironically I lost most of it from my car boot when my car was pinched in Dublin in 73 ! can't trust anyone !
I was interested to see you did the divers course at Drake, I did it in Terror when a Pome on Manxman,I was a touch unfit, over weight, and partial to rum. Put in to do the course to annoy the chief stoker and to try to get some shore time as I was on a married accompanied. It was not the best idea I've ever had, it almost killed me! I lost about three stone, getting down to weights I have not ever got down to since, passed, a lot lighter and a lot more thoughtful.Toughest thing I've ever done, was the only senior rate on the course, and I think my chief had put the word in to destroy me. Keep in touch on here
   Good Luck Stoker Stan ;)

Hiya Stan
Olongapo city, what a fun place that is. You try to discribe a run ashore there and they look at you in disbelief, or say your just "black cating".
Im glad there are still some "Ships Divers" around, not too many of us it seems. My course finnished with only ten of us, out of 20 odds. There was 6 G/S rates, a corperal and 2 booties and this little WAFU (5ft 6ins maybe a tad less). The chief diver used to say not only was i cursed with being a wafu, but i was only 4 foot and a fag paper high, LOL. He got me through though (the B*****d) (Passed 4th July 1964), Ive still got my diver,s badge off my Nos 1,s. Like you it was one or maybe the best course i did. Remember the mudruns, awkward action, and happy times on diving banyans to get minutes in. God you have started me off with memories. So ill not tell you my tale of the badgers (flight deck stokers) nearly firing me and my tractor off the Starboard cat just yet.
hope to speak again soon
fred

Well gentlemen I note a similarity among these olongapo pictures, I suspect they were all taken very early in the evening !! from memory cameras tended to have been sold, swopped or just lost by an hour into the run !! or if in the village confiscated by a bouncer. I havn't seen many photos of Olongapo before keep them comming !!
Fredtubb, I also have still got my gold divers badge !! if you ever make it to a reunion, let me know and we can sew them on our blazer cuff !! as you say we worked for them! Jack stay swimming and trying to chop through a chain link with a hammer and chisel, and oh yes I remember operation awarkwards. unfortunatly my latter days were spent in Pompy, and no ban yans there ! spent time looking for lost outboard motors in pompy harbour, black silt cold water and midshipman pleading for us to find it as he was going to have to pay for it if we didn't !! great days,  just remind me how much extra pay did we get if we got our diving minutes in? I still have my log though !!

Stan
It was 4 bob a day diving pay. And we had to log 120 minites a quarter to qualify.
If you remember it wasnt always easy to get your chief to let you off, just because he wanted some chipping and painting done. One time i was cribbing to the chief, and he said "no you cant swan off work just to enjoy your self" Lt Selwood the ships DDO was stood with our boss and he heard. He said chief if thats the case if all my ships deeps have to work there parts of ship, i sudjest you tie that tin of non-skid paint round your neck and get down there and do my required necklace seach. Chief went red, i went diving and i kept out of his way for days.
yes that would be great to sew our badges on our shirts lol

Sembawang gate, not enough space here to tell all the tales, but just out of shot was the bar that stay open late selling fried prawns in cones of newspaper, and Nasi Goring? (obviously spelled wrong), but it was great, coming back to the dockyard after a run in Singers, off the bus then pooling all the 5 and 10 cents we had left and haggling with the little chap who had the charcoal and wok, probably be battered to death by the health and safty loons now, but I never new anyone who complained of anything after dining there, mind you at 17 I could (and did) eat anything !! Saw some great rioting just outside this gate I think in 64 ? can't remember who was bashing who, but I do remember the Little police men forming a line with little wicker shields and weighted sticks and clearing the road double quick time, we could learn a lot today from those lads.
I found a web someone put up under Terror barracks worth a look
   Keep happy
