Odds and sods / New photos from Derek Bettridge.
« on: May 17, 2018, 10:13:01 PM »
I've been supplied with a CD of many pictures from Derek Bettridge. They are mainly from the 1st Commission (sadly there are no pictures of my father). I've loaded them up into the gallery - which is going from strength to strength - over 2700 photos and 4 million views. One thing that is missing is pictures of the current HMS Victorious - are there many about?

If so, I'm sure everyone would love to see them.

An apology to all - I thought I'd uploaded the Winter Edition, sadly I hadn't.

Here's the latest copy - many thanks Stan.

The Ops Room / Reunion 2013 now online!
« on: December 18, 2013, 10:54:42 PM »
After hitting the computer with Stan's large hammer and then having to hit it again with his credit card, the Gallery is now back up and running with pictures from the 2013 Reunion. http://www.hmsvictoriousassociation.com/pictures/thumbnails.php?album=18

Sorry it's taken so long, but it now seems to be working. The website has had to have extra space on the servers - currently now 9Gb - that's 9,000 million bytes of data that we are using. To put it in perspective, the Apollo moon landing computers had about 16,000 bytes of data!

At the time of writing the gallery stats are pretty impressive -
2,325 files in 18 albums viewed 4,237,090 times

I think this must be the largest archive of Victorious pictures in the world, and it's all down to you.

Many thank's for your patience,

James

The Ops Room / Back from an extended refit!
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:56:38 PM »
Hi All,

Firstly major apologies that I haven't been around as much as I would have liked, however I see Crash has kept the board looking tidy - thanks mate.

Photos from the 2012 reunion are now up in the gallery - http://www.hmsvictoriousassociation.com/pictures/thumbnails.php?album=17 - many thanks again to Crash and his trusty camera!

I've managed to fix the database issue that was stopping pictures appearing on the main site - lots of merlot has helped with that!

There is also a membership form available for download from the home page of the site - hopefully it will bring in some new members.

Hope you are all well,

James

I've got the pictures and will be uploading them all to the gallery over the next few days. I've also got something in the pipeline so that we can all enjoy George's album.

I'd like to thank Stan - he's done a great job with the album, hopefully I can do his hard work some justice.

Odds and sods / Re: Unwanted postings!!
« on: June 09, 2011, 08:05:56 PM »
Hi Gary,

Sorry to see that the site has been invaded, however the majority (if not all) of these postings are done automatically. Keeping one step ahead of them is proving to be a bit of a task, and I will look again at beefing up the registration security. I don't want to make it too hard so that some genuine people are put off from joining, but then the invasion of wasters is beginning to get a bit tiresome.

Afternoon shipmates!

I've not managed to find an online uckers game, but near the top of the screen is a new tab - Arcade. It's got games galore, all free and just a bit of fun.

Enjoy.

A run ashore / Re: 2009 Reunion

I've got back from my first reunion and I'd like to pen my thoughts - hopefully I'll not tread on too many toes and bruise too many egos.

Firstly though, I'd like to thank everyone who helped a poor little lost web designer feel welcome!

The Venue

Central Coventry for the first time visitor is not a great place to be looking for the hotel whilst trying to navigate through the ring road traffic, looking for some street names and keeping up with the traffic is not a great start (especially after the M6!)

The Hotel itself could do with a bit of a make-over, the rooms are a little tired. Clean, but tired - little things like a broken sink plug, a dripping shower head and a TV with a purple cast all add up to less than favourable first impressions.

Car parking? You mean I have to pay? And it's not part of the hotel? Other hotels have staff to park your car if the car park is off site. It's not a big thing, but for those with mobility problems it's something to think of.

First Impressions

Other than Stan, I had never met any of you - I'd seen some photos, but never met any of you in the flesh. When I arrived, the RAF held centre stage, with the Victorious hidden away. The Victorious desk was not manned - a glaring omission for first timers. A meet and greet for your shipmates and their guests would go a long way to put people at their ease. Could the committee to institute a rota, give a programme of events and maybe a page with pictures of other committee members. A cup of coffee for the weary traveller and a friendly greeting go a long, long way.

Food and Drink

A really nice evening meal on the Friday, a great venue with nice table sizes. The venue afterwards looked a little bare - not sure if that is a problem, but I would have liked to see loads of pictures, etc.

The Gala dinner was a bit of a "curate's egg". The venue was really well decorated, an interesting and informative display. The table looked lovely - Stan's models as the centerpieces were stunning. I'll describe it as cosy when we sat down though! A few inches extra would make all the difference (insert actress / bishop joke here! ;D). The food was good, no problems at all.

The entertainment, speeches and quiz were all excellent. The bar prices were very good.

Breakfast was a bit of a let down though. The staff were very slow to clear and re-set the tables. I had to take a cup from another table - I would have thought that setting a table would include a cup! A long wait for toast - inexcusable at breakfast.

This sounds really negative, and it's not meant to be - it's just the observations of someone who has never been to conference before.

I'd like to thank everyone who made me feel welcome and for all the hard work that all of you put in to making the weekend a success.

James
