Fleetwood possible mini meet 2019
« on: March 06, 2019, 04:18:38 PM »

Fleetwood. for those who do not know, is a town on the North West coast about ten miles north of Blackpool. I am not sure that many(any) really famous people come from the town, but George Formby, I happen to know, did perform at the Marine Gardens Pavilion soon after the war.
However, Fleetwood was once the third largest trawler post in the U.K. like Hull and Grimsby, and as we saw at Lowestoft at last year's mini-meet, fishing has all but died in the port..Fleetwood did have a very vibrant holiday trade, with visitors primarily coming from the industrial areas of Lancashire and Yorkshire, filling the town every summer during the "Wakes Weeks"when whole populations of cotton workers arrived into the town mostly on the railways.Like the Trawler fleet, the railway stations have long since gone.
On our visit to Sparrows nest last year, I learned a great deal about the Royal Naval Patrol Service, and discovered that the town of Fleetwood along with all the larger U.K.ports had their ships and crews requisitioned at the outbreak of war, many of them never came back. The small Fleetwood museum has some sad records, listing some of the losses,  as they say "Keeping History Alive"
Fleetwood is for the most part a quiet town, but it does still retain much of the infrastructure created in its heydays of the 1950's.A place where we could I feel, have a decent mini-meet if sufficient members feel up to the trip.

Cost is a factor when looking for a venue, and Fleetwood is considerably better value than many places we have looked at, and the hotel mentioned below, will discuss discounts for party bookings.
However, booking numbers are critical. Topsey has asked in his recent "News Letter" for members who may be interested in a Fleetwood Mini-Meet, to advise us of their interest. We are not looking for any commitment to attending, merely the possibility. I need to have a rough figure head count to bounce off the hotel manager, to see what prices he may discount us, and the optimum date we might muster. I expect to be in Fleetwood in the near future, and will be able to produce more details, but if there is insufficient interest, there will be no harm done.
The hotel picture below will be familiar to some members who attended the last Blackpool mini-meet,most had the lunch in the hotel, and spoke highly of same.Right on the seafront.Tramcars at the front door.

Fleetwood Museum, the market, the Life boat station(where we were entertained to films about rescues at sea, and shown round the new craft they now use), and the Ferry boat across the river, are all within very short walks. The hotel has free car parking to the rear, plenty of car space.

Have stayed in the hotel, and am very impressed with the place. Gale force winds whilst we visited Fleetwood, but Checked round and all seems good. Manager is willing to put together a
Mid week package for us, 2/3/4/ nights. All details to be circulated shortly. May is the favorite month at present, exact date to be sorted very shortly.Staff and food at this venue is excellent,
Free car parking behind hotel. Evening entertainment available if requested, Bar prices very good, rooms very nice indeed.A modern lift installed for those with bad knees. Trams 50 yards from door.
Relaxing Seafront lounges, even free Newspapers to be read at breakfast. Market/ museum/ Ferry boats and shopping mall all operating in May. Strongly recommended by me.

I will need some numbers, but more later on that. .... You won't want to eat in Coventry after a dinner or breakfast in this place.

WATCH THIS SPACE. Flat Tops are in hand posting soonest.  Sorry about delay, and the Christmas greetings are still heartfelt !!! ::)

I have had a few contacts, and will contact the Hotel in the next few days. The Tariff proposal from the Hotel manager here shown, is as stated inclusive of Served and cooked to order breakfast, it offers a four star menu ! The evening dinner is also of a high standard and served three course meal,

The hotel has given us a price almost half the going rate, and will offer other incentives should we request them. CAN YOU AFFORD TO MISS THIS DEAL.. I AM GOING ANYWAY.
Details of how to book in and some suggested places to see will follow after I have spoken to the manager again..

Yes we are going to have a Victorious Mini- at Fleetwood. A "Mid Week" meet at the North Euston Hotel. I have confirmed the Meeting which commences at 13th May to Friday !7th.

To reserve a room for the deal phone 01253 876525, and a nice receptionist will ask your name, and request your Credit or Debit card number number. No payment is taken until you check in.

YOU MUST ADVISE THE LADY THAT YOU ARE WITH THE HMS VICTORIOUS MEETING GROUP, otherwise you will find they charge you the normal ..(Non discount charges) :(
We are putting together info about where you may wish to wander in Fleetwood, and the Hotel General Manager has contacts round the town who may prove very interesting.
A comprehensive circular will be coming round soon, to all members, one way or another. Any problems re this meet contact me, I will sort it.

Have made our hotel booking at the North Euston Hotel, with no problem at all, and have now been advised others have also booked without a problem. We have steam, and will be at least half ahead. Note the nautical talk. ??? See a couple of items of interest, within easy walking distance of the hotel.

There is more !! ;D Some members have already booked in. No problems reported, so book in for the good rooms. Brian Tennick assures me that he has a SEA VIEW ! but he feels it may be a case of sleeping on the beach
